Winter engagement sessions truly bring out the most adventurous people! After all, you never know if the day will bring 20 degree blizzards or highs of 50 with sunshine. Thankfully, this wintery weekend brought sunshine and not-too-cold temps for my session with Kalen + Emileigh. They stopped in Des Moines to meet up with me before they get married in March (next month!) up in Cedar Falls. Kalen has become basically my adopted younger brother (he currently lives with my parents) and now Em is just like an extension of the family. They started dating in 2019 and knew pretty quickly that this was it— so they got engaged over the holidays and will be married before spring even rolls around!
We had a blast exploring the eastern downtown Des Moines area near the Iowa State Capitol building to start off engagement pictures. You can see that some snow was lingering from our latest storm—but it’s almost completely gone now, just under a week later! I love that Des Moines hosts a variety of spaces for engagement photos. Everything from parks to historic buildings, bustling downtown scenes and quiet wooded spaces. We decided for a variety of spots, so keep an eye out for the downtown skyline and a frozen lake! Jester Park was our final destination, and it’s such a gorgeous section of land. We even discovered buffalo there! Emileigh also had the idea to bring along two cute mugs she’d bought recently— ever the coffee lover, I couldn’t tell her no! Those might be some of my favorite moments of this session. I’m so excited for this winter wedding in Cedar Falls next month!
